Adhesive Backed Silica Tape: What Does the PSA Do at High Temperature?

Sep 24,2026

Adhesive backed silica tape combines two components with different jobs: the silica textile provides the high-temperature thermal barrier, while the pressure-sensitive adhesive helps position the tape during installation. Treating those two layers as though they have the same temperature capability can lead to an incorrect specification.

BSTFLEX High Temperature Silica Tape with PSA is manufactured from silica cloth slit into tape and supplied with an adhesive backing. It is intended for industrial hose, cable, tube and pipe protection where an adhesive layer can simplify wrapping and positioning before the installation is secured.

What Does the PSA Actually Do?

PSA means pressure-sensitive adhesive. Unlike a heat-cured adhesive, a PSA develops tack when pressure is applied to the tape against a suitable surface.

On a silica insulation tape, the adhesive is primarily an installation aid. It can help the installer:

  • hold the first turn of tape in position;
  • reduce movement while overlapping successive turns;
  • keep the tape aligned around a hose, cable or pipe;
  • simplify handling during fabrication or maintenance;
  • temporarily retain the tape before additional fixing is applied.

This distinction matters because the adhesive and the silica textile perform different functions. The silica layer provides thermal protection. The PSA provides tack and positioning.

Does the PSA Have the Same Temperature Rating as the Silica Tape?

No. The temperature capability of the silica textile must not automatically be assigned to the adhesive backing.

High-silica textile can remain functional at temperatures far above the normal operating range of many pressure-sensitive adhesives. When the installation temperature rises, the adhesive may soften, lose tack, carbonize or decompose while the silica layer remains in place.

This is why an industrial specification should identify at least two separate temperature questions:

Component What the buyer should confirm
Silica textile Continuous service temperature and any short-duration exposure limits for the exact textile construction.
PSA backing Recommended application temperature, service-temperature range and whether the adhesive is intended only for installation positioning.
Finished assembly Whether mechanical fixing, overlap, clamps, ties or another retention method is required in service.

If the quotation only states “silica tape rated to 982°C,” that does not by itself establish that the PSA will remain adhesive at 982°C.

What Happens to the Adhesive as Temperature Increases?

The answer depends on the adhesive chemistry, coat weight, substrate, surface condition and exposure time. A typical PSA used on a high-temperature textile can behave differently at moderate temperature than it does near a furnace or hot process line.

Possible changes include:

  • reduced tack;
  • softening;
  • loss of bond strength;
  • hardening or carbonization;
  • thermal decomposition.

For this reason, the PSA should not be treated as the sole long-term fastening method unless the adhesive system has been qualified for the exact operating condition.

Why Use PSA If It May Not Remain Adhesive at Extreme Temperature?

Because installation itself is an important part of the job.

Wrapping a flexible silica strip around a long hose, cable or tube can be difficult when the first turn moves or the overlap opens before the installer reaches the fixing point. An adhesive backing can make that work more consistent.

The PSA can therefore add value even when it is not expected to provide permanent adhesion throughout the full service life.

A useful way to think about the construction is:

PSA = positioning aid
Silica tape = thermal protection layer
Mechanical retention = long-term securement where required

When Should Mechanical Fixing Be Added?

If the tape is installed where adhesive performance may decrease during operation, specify a suitable secondary retention method.

Depending on the equipment, this may include:

  • stainless steel safety wire;
  • metal clamps;
  • high-temperature ties;
  • overlap retained by the surrounding assembly;
  • another fastening system approved for the equipment.

The fixing method should suit the underlying hose, cable or pipe. Do not use a fixing that cuts into a hose cover, damages electrical insulation or creates an unacceptable point load.

Surface Preparation Still Matters

Even when the adhesive is mainly used for temporary positioning, the installation surface affects its initial tack.

Before application, check that the surface is compatible with the adhesive and is free from loose dust, heavy oil, condensation and contamination that prevents contact. The tape should be applied using firm pressure so the PSA can wet the available surface.

Very cold surfaces, rough castings, heavily textured insulation or contaminated hoses may reduce initial adhesion. Where initial tack is critical, evaluate a sample on the actual substrate before production use.

Silica Slit Tape vs Woven Silica Tape

Adhesive backed silica tape and narrow woven silica tape should not automatically be treated as identical products.

A slit silica tape is cut from wider silica cloth. Because the longitudinal sides are cut edges, some edge fraying can occur depending on fabric construction and handling.

A woven silica tape is woven to its final width and therefore has woven longitudinal edges.

BSTFLEX supplies High Temperature Silica Woven Tape for applications where a narrow woven construction is preferred, while the PSA-backed slit version is useful where installation positioning is a key requirement.

The choice should be based on construction, handling, edge condition, dimensions and installation method rather than simply selecting whichever product has “silica tape” in its name.

Typical Industrial Applications

Adhesive backed silica tape can be considered for localized thermal wrapping and positioning around industrial components such as:

  • hydraulic hoses near high-temperature process equipment;
  • pneumatic lines exposed to radiant heat;
  • electrical cables and wiring near furnaces or heated machinery;
  • instrumentation tubing;
  • industrial pipe sections;
  • equipment assemblies requiring a narrow silica insulation strip.

For every application, first identify what temperature reaches the tape and what maximum temperature the protected component can tolerate. Installing a silica wrap does not change the original temperature rating of the hose, cable or tube underneath.

Questions an Industrial Buyer Should Put on the RFQ

A clear RFQ should separate textile requirements from adhesive requirements.

RFQ item Information to provide
Application Hose, cable, tube, pipe or equipment detail
Normal temperature Expected continuous exposure at the tape location
Peak exposure Maximum short-duration temperature and duration
Tape dimensions Required width, thickness, roll length or cut length
PSA requirement Installation aid or required service bond
Retention Wire, clamps, ties or other mechanical fixing
Quantity Prototype, production batch or recurring supply

This information allows the supplier to discuss the textile construction and the adhesive system separately instead of treating them as a single temperature rating.

Can PSA-Backed Silica Tape Be Used Without Additional Fixing?

That depends on the actual temperature, adhesive system, surface, geometry and service conditions.

For low enough temperatures and appropriate surfaces, the adhesive may continue to provide useful retention. In more severe thermal environments, the safer specification approach is to regard the adhesive as an installation aid unless test data for the exact construction demonstrates otherwise.

Where long-term retention matters, define the mechanical fastening method in the equipment drawing or work instruction.

What Should Be Verified Before Approval?

Before approving a production specification, confirm:

  • silica content and textile construction;
  • slit or woven edge construction;
  • tape width and thickness;
  • roll length;
  • continuous service temperature of the silica textile;
  • PSA chemistry and recommended service conditions;
  • installation-surface compatibility;
  • required overlap;
  • secondary fixing method;
  • quantity and packaging requirements.

For critical equipment, qualify a representative sample under the actual installation and operating conditions instead of approving the product from a headline temperature number alone.
