Custom Fabric Expansion Joint Manufacturer for Industrial Duct Systems

Industrial duct systems rarely operate under identical conditions. Duct dimensions, gas temperature, pressure, movement, particulate loading, chemical exposure and equipment layout can change substantially from one installation to another. For this reason, a custom fabric expansion joint should be engineered around the actual operating data rather than selected only by nominal duct size.

BSTFLEX manufactures custom non metallic fabric expansion joints for industrial hot-air, exhaust, flue-gas and process-gas ducting. Round, rectangular, square and non-standard configurations can be produced according to customer drawings, existing joint dimensions and project operating conditions.

Our manufacturing scope includes flexible belts, multilayer fabric constructions, insulated joints, replacement expansion joints and complete fabricated assemblies for OEM equipment, new installations, maintenance projects and plant shutdown replacements.

Fabric Expansion Joints Built Around the Duct System

A fabric expansion joint is not simply a piece of high-temperature fabric installed between two flanges. In an industrial duct system, the flexible section has to work with the surrounding equipment while accommodating the required movement and maintaining suitable sealing and thermal performance.

The design may need to account for:

  • Axial compression and extension
  • Horizontal and vertical lateral displacement
  • Angular movement
  • Combined multidirectional movement
  • Thermal cycling
  • Equipment vibration
  • Positive or negative duct pressure
  • Hot gas exposure
  • Moisture and chemical condensates
  • Dust, fly ash and abrasive particles
  • Installation misalignment

BSTFLEX evaluates these conditions before determining the flexible material system, geometry, insulation arrangement and attachment construction.

Custom Manufacturing Capabilities

Industrial expansion joints frequently have dimensions and operating requirements that do not correspond to a standard catalogue item. BSTFLEX supports project-specific manufacturing for both new equipment and replacement applications.

Manufacturing Requirement Available Customization
Shape Round, rectangular, square and special geometry
Dimensions Manufactured according to duct size or customer drawing
Face-to-Face Length Customized according to installation space and movement
Flexible Element Single-layer or engineered multilayer construction

Movement Axial, lateral, angular or combined movement
Attachment Belt-type, flanged or project-specific arrangement
Internal Protection Liners, protective layers and insulation arrangements where required
Production Type Prototype, replacement, OEM and production quantities

Round Fabric Expansion Joints

Round fabric expansion joints are commonly installed in cylindrical ducts, fan connections, exhaust systems and process-air lines.

For a custom circular joint, engineering data normally includes the duct diameter, face-to-face dimension, movement, operating temperature, pressure and process medium. The flexible construction can then be developed around the actual installation rather than relying on diameter alone.

Round designs can be supplied as flexible belts or as assemblies depending on the customer's existing duct arrangement.

Rectangular Fabric Expansion Joint Manufacturing

Large boilers, furnaces, air-handling systems, power generation equipment and process plants frequently use rectangular ductwork.

A rectangular fabric expansion joint requires particular attention to corner geometry because the four corners and straight sides respond differently as the duct moves.

For rectangular applications, BSTFLEX evaluates:

  • Duct width and height
  • Face-to-face length
  • Horizontal lateral movement
  • Vertical lateral movement
  • Axial compression and extension
  • Corner construction
  • Flange dimensions
  • Internal liner configuration
  • Gas flow direction
  • Operating pressure

Material Systems for Custom Fabric Expansion Joints

There is no single fabric construction suitable for every industrial expansion joint. Material selection depends on what each layer must accomplish inside the complete assembly.

Fiberglass Fabric

Fiberglass textiles can provide reinforcement and thermal resistance in many industrial duct applications. Different weaves, weights and surface treatments can be evaluated according to the mechanical and thermal requirements of the joint.

Silicone-Coated Fabric

Silicone-coated fiberglass can be considered where flexibility, environmental resistance and sealing performance are important within the applicable temperature range of the selected construction.

PTFE-Based Fabric

PTFE-based materials may be incorporated where the flexible element requires resistance to aggressive process media or a suitable gas-sealing layer.

Silica Fabric

For demanding thermal environments, silica textile can be considered as part of a multilayer system where higher-temperature exposure requires additional thermal protection.

BSTFLEX manufactures and processes a broad range of high temperature fabrics, allowing the flexible material package to be evaluated according to the application rather than treating the fabric belt as a generic component.

Why Multilayer Construction Is Often Required

A demanding industrial duct application may require several materials working together rather than one fabric performing every function.

A multilayer expansion joint can be engineered so that different components provide:

  • Gas sealing
  • Mechanical reinforcement
  • Thermal insulation
  • High-temperature protection
  • Chemical resistance
  • Abrasion protection

The exact layer sequence should be determined by the process conditions. The maximum gas temperature alone is not enough to specify the complete expansion joint.

High Temperature Fabric Expansion Joints

High-temperature duct systems require more than selecting a fabric with a published temperature rating.

The expansion joint manufacturer should understand the normal operating temperature as well as maximum or upset conditions, exposure duration, gas velocity, insulation arrangement and the temperature that actually reaches each layer of the flexible element.

In some applications, insulation layers and internal hot-face protection can reduce the thermal load reaching the outer sealing and reinforcement materials.

BSTFLEX can evaluate high-temperature constructions using combinations of technical textiles, coated fabrics, 96% high temperature silica fabric, insulation and protective components according to project requirements.

Fabric Expansion Joints for Flue Gas Ducts

Flue-gas systems can expose an expansion joint to a combination of heat, moisture, chemical species, particulate matter and continuous thermal cycling.

Typical installation points may include:

  • Boiler ducting
  • Air preheater connections
  • Induced draft fan connections
  • Electrostatic precipitator ductwork
  • Baghouse systems
  • Flue gas desulfurization systems
  • Scrubbers
  • Stack connections
  • Industrial exhaust ducts

For these applications, gas chemistry and particulate conditions can be as important as temperature. A protective liner or other internal protection may also be required where high gas velocity or abrasive particles could directly attack the flexible element.

Positive and Negative Pressure Duct Systems

Pressure data must be included when requesting a custom expansion joint.

Some industrial ducts operate under positive pressure, while induced-draft and exhaust systems may operate under negative pressure. These conditions affect how the flexible element behaves during service.

Provide both the normal operating pressure and design or maximum pressure where available. The pressure unit should also be clearly identified on the drawing or RFQ.

Movement Is a Design Input, Not an Afterthought

One of the principal reasons for using a fabric expansion joint is its ability to accommodate movement while imposing relatively low reaction forces on adjacent ductwork.

However, stating that an expansion joint is "flexible" is not sufficient for manufacturing.

The RFQ should define the required movement numerically whenever possible:

Movement Information to Provide
Axial Compression Maximum compression from installed position
Axial Extension Maximum extension from installed position
Horizontal Lateral Maximum horizontal offset
Vertical Lateral Maximum vertical offset
Angular Required angular displacement where applicable
Combined Movement Indicate whether movements occur simultaneously

For projects where the movement data has not yet been established, the duct-system engineer should determine the expected thermal growth and equipment displacement before final joint selection.

Replacement Fabric Expansion Joints

Not every replacement project has an original expansion joint drawing.

BSTFLEX can evaluate replacement requirements using available dimensional and operating information. Depending on the project, useful reference information may include:

  • Existing expansion joint photographs
  • Overall duct dimensions
  • Face-to-face measurement
  • Flange dimensions
  • Bolt-hole size and spacing
  • Existing belt dimensions
  • Existing liner arrangement
  • Material information
  • Normal and maximum operating temperature
  • Pressure
  • Process medium
  • Required movement

A physical sample can also be useful for certain replacement projects, particularly where the existing flexible element or attachment geometry is difficult to document.

Custom Fabric Expansion Joint Manufacturer for OEM Projects

OEM requirements are different from one-time maintenance replacements. Equipment manufacturers may require repeatable dimensions, defined material constructions, drawing control, packaging requirements and production consistency across multiple orders.

BSTFLEX supports OEM and project manufacturing for industrial customers requiring custom thermal textile components and non metallic expansion joints.

Manufacturing support can include:

  • Production according to customer drawings
  • Prototype development
  • Sample-based customization
  • Material selection support
  • Custom dimensions and geometry
  • Private-label and special packaging requirements
  • Repeat production for OEM projects

Applications Across Industrial Duct Systems

Custom fabric duct expansion joints can be considered wherever gaseous media, thermal movement and equipment vibration need to be managed in low-pressure industrial ductwork.

Industry Typical Expansion Joint Locations
Power Generation Boiler ducts, flue gas ducts, air preheaters, fans, FGD systems
Cement Kiln-related ducting, process-air ducts, dust-handling systems
Steel and Metallurgy Furnace ducts, exhaust systems, hot-gas handling equipment
Industrial Furnaces Hot-air and exhaust connections
Air Pollution Control Baghouses, scrubbers, precipitators and process-gas ducts
Fans and Blowers Inlet and outlet duct connections
Process Equipment Thermally cycling hot-air and gas-handling systems

What Should a Fabric Expansion Joint Drawing Include?

A clear engineering drawing reduces quotation time and helps prevent incorrect assumptions during manufacturing.

Where possible, include:

  • Duct diameter or width × height
  • Face-to-face dimension
  • Flange width and thickness
  • Bolt-hole diameter
  • Bolt-hole spacing
  • Flow direction
  • Internal liner dimensions
  • Insulation arrangement
  • Movement direction
  • Installed orientation

For rectangular joints, front and side views are particularly useful. CAD files or dimensional PDFs are preferred for complex configurations.
